Knott End Coastal Dog Walk | Bourne Arms, Knott End-on-Sea | Lancashire

Salt marsh and wide estuary views at Knott End-on-Sea, Lancashire

A proper dog day out

Salt-marsh views, sea air and a loop around Knott End-on-Sea, followed by something to eat at the Bourne Arms. It's a gentler alternative to Lancashire's hills, with plenty to interest a dog that enjoys an investigative sniff.

  • Difficulty: Moderate. Mostly low-lying, with paths and tracks, road crossings and a public footpath across a golf course.
  • Start and finish: Knott End ferry slipway area, Bourne May Road, FY6 0EA. Wyre Council lists free parking at Quail Holme Road car park.
  • Pub: The Bourne Arms, Bourne May Road, Knott End-on-Sea, FY6 0AB.

The walk

Start near the Knott End ferry slipway and enjoy views across the River Wyre towards Fleetwood and out over Morecambe Bay. The circular walking route follows local rights of way around Knott End, including the coastal side of the village and public footpaths by the golf course, before returning to the waterfront.

See the mapped 3.4-mile Knott End circular, with GPS/GPX options. Wyre Council also runs a shorter, roughly 2-mile led walk around Knott End, but that is a separate outing and not the exact circuit described here.

What dog owners should know

  • Tides and mudflats: keep dogs away from tidal mud, soft sands and channels. Admire the estuary from safe, established paths rather than treating the exposed foreshore as a walking route.
  • Birdlife: the coast and salt marsh can attract feeding and roosting birds. Keep dogs on leads where needed and avoid disturbing wildlife.
  • Golf course: the mapped public footpath crosses part of the golf course. Stay on the marked right of way, watch for golfers and keep your dog close.
  • Underfoot and crossings: expect a mix of promenade, tracks and paths, with roads to cross and possible muddy ground after rain. This is not an entirely paved, step-free promenade walk.

Back to the pub: The Bourne Arms

The Bourne Arms overlooks the bay and offers food, drinks and outside seating. It is listed as dog friendly by CAMRA and the venue's public listing welcomes dogs; older visitor reports specify the bar area as dog friendly. Check which indoor areas currently welcome dogs before choosing a table.

See The Bourne Arms' official website, menus and contact details.

Before you set off

Use the mapped route, check the tide and forecast, follow public footpath signs and keep dogs away from the mudflats. If you prefer something shorter, Wyre Council's Knott End short walk listing describes a separate 2-mile guided outing and its dog-lead rules.
